the processing, but hopefully some of them will be publishable). The nice assistant told me the prints would take 7 (seven) days to process as they were black and white. I said that they were sepia, supposedly processable by today's colour processing machine doodahs, but she stuck to her gums.
One week later:
I was informed by the nice assistant that my black and white prints had not been delivered to the shop. She asked when I had handed them in, and I confirmed that I had done so the previous Monday. Her explanation was that as there had been a weekend in the interim, that would probably account for the delay, since they didn't work Sundays.
I gave her the Fixer, the steely stare that has been known to still the Green Man pub during the lunchtime rush (though why they sent for an ambulance I shall never know), but she failed to appreciate the logical flaw in her reasoning.....
Two days later I got some mangled negatives and splodgy prints back, plus grovelling apology, free film, processing on the house etc. etc. The assistant assured me that this was as a birthday present to me. That's what I like: service with a simile.
Much later (March 17th):
Received my new Internet software, after the postman failed to ring once, let alone twice, and then declined to deliver said parcelette the following day. Assertive phone call produced the goods at the lunchtime delivery.
Successful installation of Turnpike and Internet Explorer 3, but cannot find a simple way of importing desired old mail and news into the new setup. I'll be doing this manually over the next few days, as well as revamping my address books etc., so please bear with me.
